How a programmable pressure environment recreates the physiology of the mountains — and why the pressure itself, not just thin air, is the stimulus.
The Stratosphere ATC is a hypobaric chamber: a sealed vessel from which air is progressively evacuated, lowering the barometric pressure around your whole body — exactly what happens as you ascend a mountain. Less pressure means less inspired oxygen (hypobaric hypoxia), plus the temperature drop and pressure oscillations of real ascent.
Because the chamber controls the pump — not the weather — altitude profiles are fully programmable: climb to 12,000 ft for a steady endurance block, or run interval "ascents" from 8,000 to 20,000 ft with transitions measured in seconds. Exercise inside the chamber compounds the stimulus.

Inside the chamber, specialized oxygen-sensing cells respond not only to falling O₂ but to changes in pressure themselves — the "pressure VIP" component. That signal starts the adaptation process. In gene-expression work on rapid altitude changes, a large share of the genome's expression shifts within 24–48 hours of exposure, cascading into pathways tied to performance, recovery, and longevity.
Barometric pressure drops around the body; oxygen and pressure receptors fire. The stressor is real, whole-body, and controllable.

You step in at sea level. The door seals, the pump spools, and the "ascent" begins — you can watch the altitude readout climb thousands of feet per minute while pressure and temperature fall around you. Train through the plateau, then "descend" back to normal in under a minute. Multiple cycles per session: that's the intermittent exposure the research favors.
Every session runs under a supervisable protocol with alarm setpoints, purge/make-up air, and manual override at the console.
